Commonwealth Games can potentially boost SA's economy

Pretoria - The hosting of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Durban can potentially create 11 650 jobs and further boost the country’s economy by an estimated R20 billion.

Briefing media on Thursday, Minister in the Presidency responsible for Performance, Monitoring and Evaluation, Jeff Radebe, said Durban has bid to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games, which was formally lodged in London on 2 March 2015.

“Another legacy of the Games will be an integrated public transport system for Durban for which the plans have already been approved,” he said.

A South African delegation has just returned to the country after a trip to London to officially bid for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The Durban's Commonwealth Games Bid Committee said their presentation was well received and the City of Durban already has facilities in place for the games.

Durban is currently the only candidate city after Edmonton in Canada pulled out, saying it would cost too much to host the games.

Minister Radebe said Cabinet also congratulated the under-17 national football team who finished as runners-up at the 2015 African Youth Championship finals last Sunday in Niamey, Niger.

Amajimbos went down 2-0 to Mali, but their gallant performance qualifies them for the FIFA under-17 World Cup in Chile later this year. - SAnews.gov.za
