Committee adopts changes to Info Bill

Wednesday, April 24, 2013

Pretoria - The National Assembly’s Ad Hoc Committee on the Protection of State Information Bill has concluded its work with the unanimous adoption of the committee report, Parliament said in a statement.

MPs adopted a report on Tuesday approving changes made by the legislature's second house.

“The committee unanimously accepted the amendments from the National Council of Provinces, which dealt with the bill before sending it back to the National Assembly.

“But the Democratic Alliance, African Christian Democratic Party and Congress of the People still object to the bill in its latest form,” said the statement.

While opposition parties and the ANC unanimously approved the changes, the Democratic Alliance, Cope, and African Christian Democratic Party all signalled they continued to oppose the bill.

The bill will be debated in the National Assembly on Thursday and if it is passed by the National Assembly, it will be sent to President Jacob Zuma to be signed into law.

Among others, it demands certain state information be protected against unlawful disclosure, alteration, destruction or loss. - SAnews.gov.za
