Pretoria – The Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital is set to get a facelift worth R4.5 million in the medical emergency unit as of 1 June to end of this year.

The Gauteng Health Department said it will be investing millions towards re-flooring of the medical emergency unit in the hospital.

The hospital Chief Executive Dr Sandile Mfenyana said Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital is currently facing problems with uneven floors, causing damage to stretchers and wheelchairs.

“Most importantly, though, blood is trapped in these holes creating a health hazard,” said Mfenyana.

The department said during renovations, the medical emergency unit will be closed and arrangements have been made with the nearby Community Health centres and the Bheki Mlangeni District Hospital to provide the service in their sites.

The department has requested patients to start at their nearest clinics and only come to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital with a referral letter.

“We will be sending staff to Bheki Mlangeni Hospital, including our Accident Emergency Unit staff, specialists and nurses, to ensure that patients are not inconvenienced while we renovate,” said Mfenyana.

He said adequate transport arrangements have been made to move patients from Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital to other facilities in the vicinity, and that ambulances will be on standby to move patients between facilities.

The department urged the public to bear with the department as the renovations will improve not only the image, but the way services are delivered at the facility. - SAnews.gov.za
