Pretoria - Security operations for the Census 2011 are running smoothly, says the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (Natjoints).
With the exception on one "unfortunate and isolated incident" in Kensington, Johannesburg, where suspects posing as Census field workers robbed two people, Natjoints said it is satisfied with security operations so far.
Natjoints comprises members of the SAPS, South African National Defence Force, government departments and Statistics South Africa.
With regards to the robbery in Kensington, every effort was being made to track down the suspects, Natjoints said.
SAPS warned that anyone who tried to exploit Census 2011 for criminal gain would face the full brunt of the law.
National Police Commissioner General Bheki Cele said a detailed security plan was in place to ensure the safety of communities during the Census.
"The joint security forces are working industriously ensuring that enumerators are moving freely as well as people are and feel safe when subjecting themselves to be counted," he said.
Census Project Director, Calvin Molongoana, appealed to the communities to verify the identity of Census officials before allowing them into their homes.
"People are advised to please be vigilant by verifying the credentials of Census takers, via the call centre, by calling the toll-free number 0800 110 248 before engaging in the enumerating process", he said.
