Friday, September 25, 2015

Pretoria - Science and Technology Minister Naledi Pandor will on Saturday open a career centre at Giyani Science Centre, in Limpopo.

The career centre will assist learners in the community and surrounding areas with career guidance, particularly in mathematics and science studies.

During the event, the Minister will raise awareness of the role of science in daily life and also urge young people to pursue careers in mathematics and science fields.

Interactive science exhibitions and engaging demonstrations will be part of the day's programme. Over 1 000 grade 11 and 12 learners, including members of the public are expected to attend and experience the world of science.

Before the hand-over of the career centre, Minister Pandor will visit the Hi-hanyile Essential Oils project in the area, which is a biosciences initiative funded by the Department of Science and Technology.

Scientists and traditional healers have collaborated in studies on indigenous plants, leading to the development of mosquito repellent candles, more effective than similar commercial products on the market.

The day will end with an Imbizo to be held at Giyani Stadium.

The Minister will be accompanied by the Limpopo MEC for Education, Ishmael Kgetjepe, Executive Mayor of the Greater Giyani Local Municipality, Patrick Hlungwani, as well as the Executive Mayor of the Mopani District Municipality, Nkakareng Rakgoane. – SAnews.gov.za
