Cabinet slams gangsterism in W Cape

Thursday, March 20, 2014

Pretoria - Cabinet has condemned the persistent gangsterism in the Western Cape, which has seen brutal attacks carried out on communities, including children.

In a recent incident, a teenager was sentenced to 24 years by the Western Cape High Court on Monday for fatally shooting Cape Town learner Glenrico Martin.

Wilston Stoffels pleaded guilty to charges of gang-related offences, murder and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, in terms of an agreement before Judge John Hlophe.

He admitted that he and co-accused Jevon Snyman had been part of a criminal gang called the Young Americans.

He said they received an order from senior gang members last year to kill Martin because he was a member of a rival gang.

“This cannot be tolerated as it threatens the gains we have made in our democracy,” said Acting Performance Monitoring and Evaluation Minister Angie Motshekga on Thursday.

Minister Motshekga was briefing the media on the outcomes of Cabinet’s regular meeting, held on Wednesday.

She said Cabinet acknowledged the work done by the South African Police Service in combating gangsterism.

She further called on the affected communities to work with police to safeguard society from this scourge. – SAnews.gov.za
