Cabinet set up task team on municipal elections

Pretoria – Cabinet has approved the establishment of an Inter-Ministerial Task Team and a Technical Task Team on Municipal Elections in the run up to the 2016 municipal elections.

Addressing the media on Thursday at a post-Cabinet briefing, Minister in the Presidency responsible for Planning, Performance, Monitoring, Evaluation and Administration, Jeff Radebe, said the 2016 municipal elections will be the fourth elections since democracy.

He said preparations for the elections were advancing so as to ensure they are as successful as the previous ones.

At its meeting on Wednesday, Cabinet was briefed on preparations for the 2016 municipal elections.

Cabinet has also approved submission of the amendment to the Local Government: Municipal Structures Act, 1998 (Act No. 117 of 1998) to Parliament, so as to provide for the President to set a date for election of all municipal councils.

President Jacob Zuma is yet to announce the date for the municipal elections. – SAnews.gov.za
