Bus commuters warned of strike

Monday, March 7, 2016

Pretoria – Bus commuters in Pretoria have been encouraged to consider using alternative means of transport because workers of two bus services in the city are on an illegal strike.

“The industrial action is a result of a recognition dispute between the bus drivers affiliated to the South African Transport and Allied worker Union (SATAWU) and the SA Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) who embarked on an unprotected strike last week Monday,” the City of Tshwane said in a statement on Monday.

Services from the Tshwane Bus Service and the A re yeng Rapid Bus Service continue to be disrupted as a result of the strike by bus drivers and other employees.

“We regret that the strike action has resulted in total disruption of the bus services, and urge commuters to consider alternative transport means, as we continue to engage with the workers representatives, and enforce our interdicts,” the city said.

The city said it will proceed with the appropriate legal action to ensure that workers wishing to return to work are not intimidated and that commuters are safe and continue to benefit from a reliable municipal bus service. – SAnews.gov.za
