Burundi's election results to be published soon

Pretoria - Provisional results for Monday's legislative and communal elections in Burundi will be available in four days.

This is because vote counting in two combined polls takes longer, the National Independent Electoral Commission chairman said on Tuesday.

"Provisional results for legislative elections will be available within three to four days and results for the communal elections will be available within two to three days," said Pierre Claver Ndayicariye, chairman of the National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI).

He indicated that teams of CENI officials were deployed to collect results of the polls at the provincial levels.

On Monday, Burundian citizens went to polls to elect 100 MPs for 18 provinces and 1 785 communal councillors for 119 communes, with 15 councillors for each communal entity.

However, the opposition boycotted the polls, arguing that the elections were not held in a favourable climate for fair, credible and inclusive elections.
