Bursary for three Mahikeng learners

Monday, August 8, 2016

Pretoria - Three learners at Setumo High School, in Mahikeng, have been awarded tertiary bursaries to study science and engineering.

Beneficiaries, Keitumetse Sebokanelo, Ontlametse Banda and Mmabatho Pule, excelled in a national public speaking competition which target mathematics and science learners.

The three were up against other provincial winners from across South Africa.

The competition, which is run by the Department of Water and Sanitation, in partnership with the Department of Education, started in 2011.

Keitumetse Sebokanelo from Majemantsho wishes to study geohydrology at the University of Durban.

She encouraged learners to follow their hearts and be passionate about what they love doing. With her love for debating, she prepared for the competition and did her research.

“The presentation was not easy, but it was through hard work. My parents are so excited and relieved about my bursary.  Things happen for a reason,” Sebokanelo said.

The general rules of the public speaking competition involve preparing a speech about climate change, alien invasive plants or water use efficiency and submitting it to the DWS’ regional office, the department said on Monday.

“The learners are then adjudicated while analysing and developing solutions to alleviate the negative impacts of their chosen theme on South African water resources,” the department said.

The department is currently mobilising for the 2017 competition.

The department has urged interested learners in the North West, to contact Peter Mogosetso on 018 387 9500 or mogosetsop@dws.gov.za for competition details. –SAnews.gov.za
