London - The newborn British princess has made her first public appearance with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge outside St. Mary's Hospital in London on Saturday evening.

The baby, born at 8:34am local time, was presented by her parents to the world at around 6:10pm.

The Duchess, Catherine, and the Duke, Prince William, looked very relaxed and smiled for the numerous cameras that had gathered. The Duchess was holding the sleeping baby in her arms.

The couple didn't say anything in front of the media, but the Duke of Cambridge said he was "very happy" at the arrival of his second child when he went to Kensington Palace earlier in the afternoon to take his son to the hospital.

The older brother, Prince George, met his baby sister in the afternoon.

The royal family then left the hospital for Kensington Palace, which is just a few minutes away.

The newborn princess, which weighed about 3.7kg, is now the fourth in line to the British throne, behind her brother George, father William and grandfather Prince Charles.

"Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well," Kensington Palace said in a statement on Saturday morning. – SAnews.gov.za-Xinhua
