Senegal made its first World Cup appearance in 2002 and caused a huge upset by defeating world and European champions France 1-0 in the tournament's opening game.

Senegal reached the quarterfinals of the 2002 World Cup, making them one of only three African teams to do so (the first being Cameroon in 1990 and Ghana in 2010).

In the group, after defeating France, they drew with Denmark and Uruguay and beat Sweden in extra time in Round 2 before losing to Turkey in the quarterfinals.

Senegal disappointed its fans in 2006 when they failed to qualify for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

Another upset was caused when the Senegalese team was booted out in the group stages of the 2012 Afcon finals by Zambia at the tournament hosted by both Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.

It is not yet known whether the Teranga Lions will bring the likes of Mousa Sow, Mamadou Niang, Papiss Demba Cisse and their striking kingpin Demba Ba who plays for New Castle.

Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane is expected to announce his formidable team to face Senegal on Thursday.
