Awaiting trial prisoners to get new uniforms

Monday, January 19, 2015

Pretoria – The Department of Correctional Services has started rolling out the new yellow uniforms for  remand/awaiting trial prisoners.

The department said the new uniforms will differentiate remand or awaiting prisoners from convicted prisoners who wear orange uniforms.

The department said this will increase their visibility and reduce the number of escapes by awaiting prisoners.

The project is expected to cost R31 million, with prisoners sewing the uniforms from fabric supplied by a private company.

According to departmental spokesperson Manelisi Wolela, the new uniform was launched last year during the Correctional Services Week.

“We are still rolling out the new uniforms,” he said.
