ANC, DA fare strongly in the metros

Pretoria – With vote counting continuing into the evening, results in the municipal elections show that the African National Congress and the Democratic Alliance remain the parties of choice in most of the country’s metros.

By 5pm on Thursday afternoon, the Democratic Alliance had 49.49% support while the African National Congress garnered 39.25% in Nelson Mandela Bay m,etro in the Eastern Cape. The Economic Freedom Fighters had garnered 4.87% of votes counted thus far in the metro.

Meanwhile, in Buffalo City, the ANC had 56.47% of votes counted thus far followed by the DA with 27.94% and the EFF receiving 7.37% of votes.

In the 2011 municipal elections, the ANC had 70.1% of the total votes cast in Buffalo City, while the DA had 20.48% of support.

In the Western Cape, the DA was leading with 68.5% support followed by the ANC with 22.35%. In the previous municipal elections, the DA won the metro with 60.92% of votes.

In Gauteng’s Ekurhuleni, the ANC had 45.01% followed closely by the DA with 40.48% as vote counting continued. In 2011, the ANC obtained 61.63% of votes, while the DA only managed to obtain 30.29% of votes.

The City of Johannesburg saw the DA and ANC almost neck-and-neck as results continued to come through. The DA had 42.09% support, while the ANC had 42.02%, followed by the EFF with 10.09%.

In the 2011 municipal elections, the ANC received 58.56 % of votes, while the DA had 34.62% of votes in the city of gold.

The Free State, which was at 91% of vote counting, saw the ANC take the lead with 57.66%, while the DA was standing at 24.32%. Mangaung is the birthplace of the ruling party. In the previous election, the ANC had 66.27% of the vote. – SAnews.gov.za
