Pretoria - The South Africa government on Friday condemned, in the strongest terms, the attack on the town of Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo by M23, Raia Mutomboki and other armed groups against the Congolese army.
This came hours after the rebels seized the eastern city of Goma. The reportedly rebels met little resistance from the army or UN peacekeepers.
"The South African Government is deeply concerned by the humanitarian impact of this attack, particularly on vulnerable groups," the Department of International Relations and Cooperation said in a statement.
The Government of South Africa called for a cessation of all hostilities and urged members of the international community including International Conference on the Great Lakes Region, Southern African Development Community and the African Union to once again assist towards finding an amicable solution so as to bring about stability in the DRC.
Meanwhile, the UN Security Council has backed a resolution calling for sanctions against leaders of rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In its resolution, the Security Council demanded an end to foreign support for the M23 rebels and expressed readiness to take appropriate measures. - SAnews.gov.za
