President Zuma congratulates Prime Minister-elect of Mauritius

Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma has extended his congratulations to Anerood Jugnauth on his election as the Prime Minister of Mauritius following a resounding victory by his party in the country’s legislative elections that were held last week.

At the age of 84, Jugnauth becomes prime minister after resigning from the presidential position in March 2013 and replaced by the current president.

His party, the Opposition Alliance Lepep, won 47 of the 60 direct seats available in the country's Parliament after the elections that were held on December 10.

In his message, President Zuma also congratulated the people of Mauritius for conducting peaceful, credible and free and fair elections.

“The successful elections in Mauritius attest to the stability and strength of democracy in this Southern African country,” President Zuma said on Thursday.

The President further expressed South Africa’s readiness to continue to partner with the government and the people of Mauritius in the pursuit of the already existing mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries.

South Africa and Mauritius enjoy strong, warm and fraternal relations that are characterized by regular and increasing interaction at all levels. - SAnews.gov.za
