Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma has arrived in Mozambique ahead of the inauguration ceremony of the President-elect of that country, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, the Presidency said on Thursday.
“South Africa and Mozambique enjoy strong historical ties based on geographical proximity, and the role played by Mozambique in providing solidarity during the struggle against apartheid and colonial oppression,” the Presidency said.
President Zuma’s visit to Mozambique comes shortly after his return from the Republic of Angola, where he held consultations with President Jose Eduardo Dos Santos.
President Zuma made a stop-over in Luanda on his way from Conakry in the Republic of Guinea.
“In their discussions, the two Heads of State reviewed the state of bilateral relations between Angola and South Africa, and expressed their satisfaction with the growing cooperation as evidenced by increasing trade volumes,” the Presidency said.
It is said that the two Presidents also exchanged views on the state of peace and security on the African continent, paying particular attention to the matter of disarmament on the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda, known by its French abbreviation FDLR.
The Presidency said the two Presidents further discussed cooperation within the context of the established trilateral mechanism between Angola, South Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
“In this regard, President Dos Santos and President Zuma emphasised the need to set up a permanent institutional framework to coordinate the work of the trilateral mechanism,” the Presidency said.
President Zuma was accompanied on the visit by the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Maite Nkoana-Mashabane. - SAnews.gov.za
