Windhoek - The acting president of the African Union (AU), President Bingu Wa Mutharika of Malawi, has appealed for reinforcement of co-operation among the states of the continent to achieve sustainable growth and food security.

President Bingu Wa Mutharika was addressing the 30th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) which started Monday in the Namibian capital, Windhoek.

He also spoke of the need for the use of Information Technology (IT) to achieve progress.

He said Africa must become a self-sufficient continent in terms of food, so that no child died of hunger.

The President appealed to SADC member states to continue with efforts leading to the transformation of Africa into a granary, as it had the potential for the purpose.

The AU acting president also called for efforts to reduce child mortality rates while expressing concern at the high maternal mortality rate.

He also called for a support for Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) initiatives that improved medical assistance to children and women.

On the other hand, he congratulated the SADC on its engagement in the mediation of conflicts and promotion of good relationships which, he added, had been a contribution to regional stability and economic development.
