Addis Ababa - African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma has voiced concern over the outbreak of fighting in parts of Juba, the capital of South Sudan, since late Sunday.

A media statement issued by the AU on Tuesday said she was particularly concerned about the safety and security of the civilian population, and urged the government and leadership of South Sudan and all other stakeholders to exercise maximum restraint and avert any further escalation.

Dlamini Zuma urged them to seek solutions to their differences through peaceful means, with due respect for the rule of law, human rights and constitutional legality.

She expressed the AU's readiness to assist in finding a lasting solution to the current situation in that country.

Media reports say the fighting since Sunday night between two groups of the South Sudan presidential guard has left 26 people dead and about 140 others injured. – SAnews.gov.za-NNN-ENA
